PATTERNS
TOPIK 1-2

N에 와요

comes to (a place)

Says that someone is moving towards here. 에 marks the destination — where they end up. The polite form of 오다 is 와요 (오 + 아요 contracts to 와요). One of the first particles a beginner uses, and one of the easiest to confuse with 에서.

접속 conjugation
  • Place nouns take 에 directly, with no vowel/consonant split: 회사에 와요 / 사무실에 와요
  • Forms of 오다: present 와요, past 왔어요, honorific 오세요
  • Whether you use 오다 or 가다 depends on where the speaker stands: towards me is 오다, away from me is 가다
다음 주에 본사 감사팀이 저희 지점에 와요.
The audit team from head office is coming to our branch next week.

에 is the destination, 에서 is the origin or the place an action happens. 집에 와요 = comes to the house; 집에서 와요 = comes from the house. Both are correct, and they mean opposite things.

TOPIK 3-4

A-다는 것은 N에서 알 수 있다

you can tell … from …

States a fact, then says what it is you are reading that fact off. The N in the second half is your evidence — usually a figure, a document, or something visible. Common in reports and analysis because it delivers the conclusion and the grounds for it in one sentence.

접속 conjugation
  • Adjectives take -다는 것은: 부족하다 → 부족하다는 것은
  • Verbs take -ㄴ/는다는 것은: 가다 → 간다는 것은 / 먹다 → 먹는다는 것은. Past tense is always -았/었다는 것은
  • The evidence can be marked with either N에서 or N(으)로: 보고서에서 / 이번 수치로
수요가 줄었다는 것은 지난달 주문량에서 알 수 있습니다.
You can tell demand has fallen from last month's order volume.

Don't confuse it with -기 때문에. This pattern is not about the cause, it is about what you are reading the fact off. 매출이 줄었다는 것은 이번 분기 보고서에서 알 수 있습니다 — the report is how you know, not why sales fell.

TOPIK 5-6

N에서 N의 비중이 높다

the share of … within … is high (large / small / low)

Weighs one part against the whole it sits in. The first N is the whole, the second is the part. Any of 높다, 낮다, 크다 or 작다 will do, with little difference in feel. Standard phrasing in financial statements, market analysis and presentations.

접속 conjugation
  • Mark the whole with N에서 and attach 비중 to the part with N의: 전체 매출에서 수출의 비중이 높습니다
  • The 「차지하는 비중」 form is more explicit: 수출이 차지하는 비중이 큽니다
  • All four adjectives work: 높다·낮다 (high/low proportion) and 크다·작다 (large/small share)
저희 수출에서 동남아 시장이 차지하는 비중이 매년 높아지고 있습니다.
The share of Southeast Asian markets in our exports rises every year.

비중 always needs a “within what”. Say 수출의 비중이 높다 on its own and your listener waits for the whole. Set it out first with N에서. Note too that 비중 carries a sense of weight and importance — for a plain percentage, 비율 is the more accurate word.

분기 보고서 진행 상황 Where the quarterly report stands——Team Leader Oh asks how the quarterly trade-division report is coming along. Assistant Manager Kang explains what data is missing and why it has been held up; she clears the obstacle, and he commits to a deadline.오 팀장=Team Leader Oh (manager) / 강 주임=Assistant Manager Kang (the one doing the work)

오 팀장강 주임님, 분기 무역 부문 보고서는 어디까지 됐어요?
Mr. Kang, how far along is the quarterly trade-division report?
강 주임초안까지 나왔습니다. 다만 자료가 조금 부족해서 보완하고 있습니다.
The first draft is done. The data is a little thin though, so I'm filling the gaps.
오 팀장어떤 자료가 빠져 있어요?
Which data is missing?
강 주임매입 단가 원본입니다. 시스템 비밀번호가 초기화돼서 접근이 늦어졌습니다.
The raw purchase-price figures. The system password got reset, so access was delayed.
오 팀장그 문제라면 시스템 담당자가 오후에 저희 사무실에 와요. 그때 같이 처리해요.
If that's the problem, the systems person is coming to our office this afternoon. We can sort it out together then.
강 주임감사합니다. 물가가 오른 폭이 크다는 것은 이번 달 매입 단가에서 알 수 있습니다. 그 부분도 보고서에 반영하겠습니다.
Thank you. You can tell how sharply prices have risen from this month's purchase prices. I'll work that into the report too.
오 팀장좋아요. 지금 저희가 가장 많이 버는 쪽이 무역이에요. 전체 매출에서 무역 부문이 차지하는 비중이 크니까 그 수치는 꼭 넣어 주세요.
Good. Trade is where we earn the most right now. The trade division's share of total revenue is large, so make sure that figure goes in.
강 주임알겠습니다. 이번 주 금요일까지 최종본을 올리겠습니다.
Understood. I'll upload the final version by Friday this week.
