A/V-네요
Oh, ...!
In conversation, when something you see or hear firsthand makes you realize something on the spot, -네요 conveys an impressed or surprised reaction. It can also acknowledge what the other person has said and show that you relate. Do not use it to explain a fact you already knew. Among close friends, drop 요 and say -네.
- Verb or adjective stem + -네요
- 크다크네요
- 잘하다잘하네요
- For stems ending in ㄹ, drop ㄹ and add -네요
- 멀다머네요
- 만들다만드네요
- Noun + (이)네요
- 학생학생이네요
- 친구친구네요
※For a fact you already know and are simply stating, use -아요/어요 instead: ✗ 제 고향은 부산이네요 / ✓ 제 고향은 부산이에요 (when introducing your hometown) The meaning of -군요 is similar, but it sounds a little more like self-talk or writing, while -네요 is lighter and more conversational
A-(으)ㄴ지 A-(으)ㄴ지, V-는지 V-는지
whether A or B
Two contrasting expressions are placed side by side, as in 좋은지 나쁜지 or 오는지 안 오는지. The pattern is often followed by words meaning “know,” “not know,” “check,” “ask,” or “wonder.” When the same expression is given in positive and negative forms, the second part uses 안 ~는지 or ~지 않는지. For past events, use -았/었는지 -았/었는지.
- Adjective stem + -(으)ㄴ지
- 크다큰지 작은지
- 많다많은지 적은지
- Verb stem or 있다/없다 + -는지
- 오다오는지 안 오는지
- 있다있는지 없는지
- For past events, stem + -았/었는지
- 끝나다끝났는지 안 끝났는지
- 받다받았는지 안 받았는지
※For present-tense adjectives, use -(으)ㄴ지, not -는지: ✗ 방이 넓는지 좁는지 몰라요 / ✓ 방이 넓은지 좁은지 몰라요 Using only one -(으)ㄴ/는지 clause asks what the state or situation is; placing two side by side emphasizes determining which of the two applies
설마 A/V-겠어요?
Surely not?
A sentence with this pattern starts with 설마 and ends in -겠어요? Rather than asking a genuine question, it makes clear that the speaker thinks the situation will not occur or cannot be true. It can reassure someone who is worried or cast doubt on something difficult to believe. Among people who are close, the casual form is 설마 -겠어? For past events, use 설마 -았/었겠어요? This is a spoken pattern. Because it concerns an outcome the speaker does not want, use 혹시 instead when asking in hope of good news.
- 설마 + verb or adjective stem + -겠어요?
- 늦다설마 늦겠어요?
- 비싸다설마 비싸겠어요?
- Past event
- 설마 + stem + -았/었겠어요? : 잊다설마 잊었겠어요?
- 떠나다설마 벌써 떠났겠어요?
- Noun
- 설마 + noun + (이)겠어요? : 거짓말설마 거짓말이겠어요?
- 실수설마 실수겠어요?
※혹시 cautiously asks while leaving the possibility open, whereas 설마 speaks from the assumption that it cannot be so 설마 -(으)ㄹ까요? asks about the doubt more cautiously, while 설마 -겠어요? makes the speaker’s judgment that it cannot be so clearer
