N을/를 잘 못하다

to be not very good at

Says you can’t do something well. 못하다 on its own means “can’t”; adding 잘 softens it to “can’t do it well”, which is the usual way to be modest about yourself.

접속 conjugation
  • N + 을/를 잘 못하다:운전을 잘 못해요/요리를 잘 못합니다
  • with a verb, use V-는 걸 잘 못하다 or 잘 못 V: 일찍 일어나는 걸 잘 못해요
  • drop 잘 and it gets blunter: 요리를 못해요 (can’t cook at all)
저는 마케팅 쪽 일을 잘 못해서 자료부터 찾고 있습니다.
I’m not very good at marketing work, so I’m starting by gathering material.

Spaced, 잘 못하다 means “can’t do it well”; written as one word, 잘못하다 means “to do something wrong” — quite different. Note too that 못하다 is about ability, while 안 하다 is about not wanting to.

TOPIK 3-4

A-(으)ㄴ데도 불구하고

even though, despite

The first clause ought to lead to one outcome, and the second delivers the opposite. It sharpens the contrast more than plain -는데도, and belongs to formal speech and writing.

접속 conjugation
  • adjective A-(으)ㄴ데도 불구하고: 바쁘다 → 바쁜데도 불구하고
  • verb V-는데도 불구하고: 노력하다 → 노력하는데도 불구하고
  • noun N인데도 불구하고; for the past, -았/었는데도 불구하고
광고를 늘렸는데도 불구하고 반응이 크지 않았습니다.
Even though we increased the advertising, the response wasn’t strong.

You can drop 불구하고 and keep just -는데도, which sounds lighter. The two clauses must genuinely clash — if you only need a plain “but”, -지만 will do.

TOPIK 5-6

따지고 보면

when you think about it, ultimately

Used when you reach a judgement after weighing something up, usually carrying the sense that the surface reading doesn’t survive scrutiny. It is a fixed phrase and sits at the head of the second sentence; it doesn’t change with the subject.

접속 conjugation
  • goes after the claim being reconsidered: “A. 하지만 따지고 보면 B.”
  • similar phrases: 알고 보면 (as it turns out), 생각해 보면 (come to think of it)
  • fine in speech and writing; neutral in tone, never impolite
매장 매출이 줄었지만 따지고 보면 서비스 만족도는 올랐습니다.
Store sales are down, but when you think about it, service satisfaction has actually risen.

It can’t sit mid-sentence as a connective — it stands at the front of the following sentence. And it reconsiders a conclusion already on the table; if you are just adding detail, 사실은 reads better.

자료 정리 순서 묻기 Asking what order to work through the material——Jihoon, new to the team, asks his senior Eunju how to organise the marketing material for a new product. She sets out the order and adds a warning.지훈=Jihoon (new hire) / 은주=Eunju (senior colleague)

지훈선배님, 신제품 마케팅 자료는 어느 순서로 정리하면 될까요?
What order should I work through the marketing material for the new product?
은주먼저 매장별 반응부터 모아요. 숫자보다 현장 이야기가 먼저예요.
Start by collecting the response from each store. What people say on the floor comes before the numbers.
지훈그렇군요. 사실 저는 아직 이런 자료를 잘 못해서 시간이 좀 걸릴 것 같습니다.
I see. To be honest I’m not very good at this kind of material yet, so it may take me a while.
은주처음엔 다 그래요. 자료가 많은데도 불구하고 기한은 짧으니까, 중요한 것부터 골라요.
Everyone starts there. Even though there’s a lot of material, the deadline is short — so pick out what matters first.
지훈어떤 것부터 봐야 할까요?
Which should I look at first?
은주고객 서비스 쪽 기록이요. 따지고 보면 불만이 가장 정확한 데이터예요.
The customer service records. When you think about it, complaints are the most accurate data you have.
지훈알겠습니다. 혹시 보상 관련 내용도 넣어야 할까요?
Understood. Should I include the compensation side as well?
은주넣으세요. 그 부분이 잘 정리되면 팀 보너스 평가에도 도움이 돼요.
Do. If that part is well put together, it helps with the team bonus review too.
