TOPIK 1-2

N입니다

is / are

Turns a noun into a formal statement of fact. Use it to introduce someone, identify an object, or announce something. It sits one step above the -이에요/예요 of everyday speech, so it belongs in presentations, written notices, and anything you say to a client.

접속 conjugation
  • Attaches straight to the noun, whether or not it ends in a consonant: 학생 → 학생입니다 / 의사 → 의사입니다
  • For a question, swap 다 for 까: 담당자입니다 → 담당자입니까?
  • The negative is a different word: N이/가 아닙니다 — 학생이 아닙니다
이쪽이 이번 프로젝트를 맡은 담당자입니다.
This is the person handling the project.

Do not negate it with 안 in front. 「안 학생입니다」 is wrong. 입니다 has its own negative form, 아닙니다, so you say 「학생이 아닙니다」 — and the particle changes from 은/는 to 이/가 as well.

TOPIK 3-4

A-다면서요?

I hear that… is that right?

Takes something you were told and puts it to the person in front of you for checking. It assumes you have already heard the news, so you are not asking for information but testing whether what you heard matches the facts. Depending on tone it can sound curious or faintly accusing.

접속 conjugation
  • Adjectives take it straight onto the stem: 바쁘다 → 바쁘다면서요? / 좋다 → 좋다면서요?
  • Verbs need -ㄴ/는다 first: 가다 → 간다면서요? / 먹다 → 먹는다면서요?
  • The past goes after -았/었: 춥다 → 추웠다면서요?
  • In speech it often contracts to -다며요?
이번 겨울이 유난히 춥다면서요?
I hear this winter is unusually cold?

You cannot use it for something nobody told you. Saying 「이 옷 예쁘다면서요?」 the first time you see a piece of clothing is odd, because the form presupposes that someone mentioned the clothes were pretty. It is not your own reaction in the moment. For that, say 「이 옷 예쁘네요」.

TOPIK 5-6

V-는 등 N에 재능을 발휘하다

showed talent in…, by doing… and so on

List a few concrete things someone did, then close with the field in which they showed their talent. -는 등 means these are samples rather than the whole list, so two or three are plenty and the reader fills in the rest. You will meet it in profiles, award citations, and CVs.

접속 conjugation
  • -는 등 attaches to a verb stem, and a final ㄹ drops: 찍다 → 찍는 등 / 만들다 → 만드는 등
  • Chain earlier verbs with -고 and put -는 등 only on the last one: 글을 쓰고 사진을 찍는 등
  • Mark the field with N에. 재능 can be swapped for 능력, and both pair with 발휘하다
그 선배는 글을 쓰고 사진을 찍는 등 여러 분야에 재능을 발휘했어요.
That senior showed talent in several fields, writing and taking photographs among them.

Do not put an already complete list in front of 등. The word means there are others you have not named, so writing something closed like 「1등과 2등 등」 contradicts itself.
