TOPIK 5-6

V-ㄴ/는답시고usage

claiming to V, but with poor results

The first clause presents the subject’s stated intention or justification, while the second describes an unexpected or unsatisfactory result. The expression carries criticism or sarcasm; when used about your own actions, it becomes a self-deprecating apology. Because it can sound disparaging, do not use it directly to describe a superior’s actions.
